Bill Grove

Bill Grove, 48, was born and currently resides in Toronto.
 He began playing music at the relatively late age of nineteen
 and spent the large part of his twenties studying, at first
 independently,and then for four years at York University and at
 the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His teachers include
 pianists James Anagnason and Casey Sokol, clarinetist Morris Eisenstadt,
 the composer Samuel Dolin and theorist/pianist John Gittins.

Since 1980 Grove has led a number of musical groups,
 each featuring his own compositions. Whitenoise (1981-88),
 Not King Fudge (1986-91) and Noise R Us (1991-96) have
 each been prominent in the Toronto "new jazz" scene. Grove
 also works with veteran pianist Bob Fenton. They have played
 in the Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver jazz festivals and
 released a recording, "Humbercrest", in October 1991.

Grove has worked in the theatre and in dance and has composed
 four film scores. His theatre credits include " Theatre Pass
 Muraille's Hamlet (1985) and the comic opera " The Gods
 of Money " (1983). In dance he has worked with Robert Desrosiers,
 Danny Grossman, Judith Miller and Claudia Moore. His scores include
 the film "Scenes from Macbeth" (1991), directed by Chris Philpotts.

Since 1983 Grove has hosted the weekly four hour radio program " What is Jazz " show on Toronto's CKLN 88.1 FM. He teaches composition and gives lessons on piano, reeds and guitar in Toronto.

Currently he leads The Grove Group, a sextet which has
 released a CD, " Maraschino Harmonicas " (Nov. 99). 
As well he works with Bob Fenton and Nick Fraser (drums)
 as The Bill Grove Trio, and leads The Human Remains,
 an improvising chamber ensemble of 'cello, violin, reeds and marimba.
